Since it has been made public that Lakers star Kobe Bryant sustained a concussion in this past weekend’s All-Star game after being fouled by Dwayne Wade, the big question has become whether or not Bryant will be cleared to play in this Sunday’s game against the Miami Heat.

According to NBA guidlines, a player who has suffered a concussion must do the following in order to be cleared to play:

1.  Be free of concussion symptoms

2.  Make it through increasing stages of exertion without problems

3.  Be cleared by an NBA neurologist.

So, the short answer to the question of whether Bryant will play is that we don’t know and probably won’t know until later in the week.  One would think he would rest until today or Thursday to try to keep the symptoms under control and avoid further injury, then begin going through the necessary procedures for clearance by Friday.

Luckily for Kobe and the fans, the neurologist that must clear him is an NBA employee rather than an independent.  I’m not saying this doctor won’t use his best judgment, but it sure doesn’t hurt Kobe’s chances of playing that the doctor evaluating him is being paid by the compan that makes money when Kobe is on the court doing what he does in the fourth quarter.

Especially considering that the cuncussion was ruled as “minor,” I would say it’s a safe bet that you’ll see number 24 on the floor this Sunday.

The game will air this Sunday, March 4th at 3:30 PM (ET) on ABC.
